Making the Best of Your Child's Visit
Dentistry has made great advancements over the years and the one we are most proud of at Dental Group of Springfield is the quality of dental care that we can give to children. You may not have had a great dental experience as a child but with today's advances your child's dental experience should have a life long positive impact. Even with advances in dentistry, it is very common for children to get cavities that need to be treated in both baby teeth and permanent teeth.
Our goal is to give your child the same quality care that we give adult patients. With children there are several key factors that attribute to the success of the quality of care and overall positive experience for your child. Children do not instinctively fear dental care. It is our job to make sure they stay that way.
As a parent there are several things you can do to help make this a positive experience for your child.
- Children are amazingly perceptive. You need to have a positive attitude or your child will feed off your anxiety and fear.
- Language we use with children is different from that of adults. There are several words that we will not use when a child is being treated. As you talk to your child try to avoid these words: Hurt, Pain, Shot, Needle, Scared, Drill.
- Phrases to use to describe your child's first visit or routine cleanings: "count your teeth", "tickle your teeth with an electric toothbrush", "paint vitamins on your teeth".
- We believe you should explain to your child they are going to the dentist but use general terms. Do not bring up to much. Tell them once a couple of days prior to the appointment then again on the morning of the appointment and that is it.
